Bon Portage Lighthouse

The Bon Portage Island lighthouse was established in 1874.  For the next 110 years, 16 lightkeepers and their families kept the light.  In 1929, the Richardson family purchase the Bon Portage Island.  They lived on the island for the next 35 years raising their family. Evelyn Richardson’s book We Keep a Light., published in 1945 tells the story of their life on the island.

Bon Portage Lighthouse is best seen by boat, but a distant view is possible from Chapel Hill Museum & Sea Tower in Shag Harbour
