And for our community, we strive to promote Nova Scotia in general and the South Shore in particular as a premier vacation destination.

John Foss and Helen Potgieter

Travel has always been an part of our lives. John’s early childhood was spent traveling across Canada moving from place to place with his family. Eventually, he settled in Ottawa, and graduated from Algonquin College with a diploma in Marketing and Business Administration.

I was born in South Africa. At the age of 2, I took my first flight and moved to the England with my parents.  After ten years of living in the South of England we emigrated to Canada.  I stayed in Kanata – just outside Ottawa for my high school years and completed my first degree – a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Ottawa University.  We moved to Toronto in the late ’80s so I could take my Bachelor of Education.

In August 1990 – 4 days before moving to the Dominican Republic, we married.  John worked as a PADI Dive Master, and I ran the “Sosua Private School”.  After two years of tropical living, we returned to Canada.  And, started planning our next trip … nine months around Europe in an ex-Dutch Army camper van appropriately named “The General”.  After another short stint at home, we set off again… to Thailand for 7 months.

Finally, after five years of almost non-stop traveling, we traded in their backpacks and cameras for briefcases and grip gear. I worked as a Training Manager for a design firm in Toronto, while John worked as a Grip in the film industry.  Eventually, tired of the Toronto lifestyle, we moved to Shelburne, Nova Scotia where we opened The Millstones Bed and Breakfast.
